Oppo-

Kinja'd!!!

I am and idiot. I did this this morning backing into a parking spot. It all happened in slow motion (probably because I was going 2 MPH) and I saw it all unfold. Instead of slamming on the breaks part of me I guess thought - O it will just bend backwards and be fine. WRONG. I feel like I was possessed and just wanted to break something- its really just inexplicable.

Anyway - it needs to be fixed. So here's my dilemma, get a used OEM part for 80 bucks. Or, get a new !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for $115 bucks. Its power adjustable, heated, and has a blinker in it which all worked before I wrecked it.

It would help if we knew what kind of vehicle this is.

I'd say you've already had... knock off parts

mwahahahaha...

but seriously, I'd go used. Knock off tend to have fitment issues. At least go for one that is OEM replacement style, which usually means its been certified in some manner to fit. Your local bodyshop likely has many connections of such parts as they will attempt whenever possible to bill your insurance for the legit part, but use the cheaper but good fitting impersonator.

summary: used (if possible), respectable brand knock off, but not some random ebay knock off.

Is a junkyard one an option? Might be even cheaper. Moral of the story, OEM used is best bet. It's a mirror, what could go wrong?

The used one would be coming from a junkyard they just pick and mail it to you. Living in a city makes it impossible to find a junkyard, plus they apparently had 3 different mirrors on this one model of Passat so finding the right one would probably be tough.

Im worried that the used mirror might have a broken motor or blinker. That's why I'm hesitant.

I appreciate your humor. I can assure was I wasn't smiling this morning haha. My only concern with used as that the motor is broken or that the blinker wont work. I'll probably go used though and roll the dice.

Normally the pick-and-post junkyards will give you a refund/send you a replacement if the picked part turns out to be junk. That's not so great when you discover the gearbox you just fitted is crap, but it doesn't really matter with something simple like a mirror.

Or, just sneak up behind a soccer-mum in her SUV in the supermarket car park, wait until she starts to reverse, then claim she hit your mirror and demand she pays for it to be fixed.
